Currently one of the most publicized forms of natural weight loss products in America, the hoodia diet has been hailed by some as a miracle weight loss program. What is Hoodia?

 

Hoodia gordonii, also known as hoodia, xhooba, khoba, Ghaap, South African desert cactus, is a rare botanical that grows exclusively in the semi-deserts of South Africa. A cactus like plant, it grows in clumps of upright stems is considered a succulent and not a cactus. It can take approximately 5 years before the plant produces its pale-purple flowers and is ready for harvest. While there are over 20 types of hoodia, only the hoodia gordonii variety is believed to have appetite-suppressing properties.

 

How Does It Work?

 

Used by the San Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert for numerous years to ward of hunger and thirst during hunting trips, hoodia has only recently been recognized in the United States and Europe as an effective dietary supplement.

 

Scientists have found several compounds in the plant that helps with appetite suppression. It contains a steroidal glycoside molecule known as P57 that is 10,000 times as active as glucose, resulting in the nerve cells in the mid-brain trigging the feeling of fullness. Simply put, the compounds in the plant trick your body into believing it is full.

 

Hoodia in the Marketplace

 

A mainstay of all hoodia diet programs, Hoodia supplements can be purchased in various forms including pills and liquid extracts. These supplements may be noted as having pure hoodia or the hoodia may be only part of the complete makeup of the supplement. These supplements can be purchased from representatives of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) certified manufacturers. Check your local drug store or check out hoodia products available on the Internet.

 

Keeping it Real

 

Due to the rarity of the plant and its limited growing area, fakes and counterfeits as well as diluted hoodia products are running rampant in the marketplace. Real hoodia is very rare, controlled and expensive. The South African government has strictly regulated exportation of hoodia to the rest of the world. Hoodia is a CITES – an international agreement between countries to protect and regulate international trade of animals and plants – making it impossible for all the products advertising themselves as a hoodia supplement to be, in fact, real. Studies have shown that as many as 50% of hoodia products contain little or no hoodia at all.

 

Is Hoodia For You?

 

If you want a low to no risk dietary supplement the hoodia diet could be for you. But due to strict guidelines and growing restrictions, hoodia is not as available as it seems and can be quite expensive. And be sure to keep in mind that what you see may not be always be what you get – just because it says hoodia that does not mean that it is hoodia. Stretches to Boost Your Weightlifting Routine

 

Stretching is an important part of any weightlifting routine. It lengthens tendons, gives you a wider range of motion, loosens joints, and prevents injury. Here are some stretching basics to add to your workout routine.

Pre-workout Stretches

Pre-workout stretches are called dynamic stretches. Dynamic stretches are stretches where you are moving quite a bit. This warms up your muscles while stretching them. Warm muscles are less prone to injury and gain muscle faster.

For example, one dynamic stretch is doing windmills with your arms.

Twisting your trunk while swinging your arms from side to side is also a great dynamic stretch that warms up your arms and core.

Post-workout Stretches

Post-workout stretches are also called static stretches. Static stretches are less active than dynamic stretches because after your workout your muscles are warm and can stretch better. This is the time to really stretch your muscles to your last limit.

Work on trying to touch your toes. Touching your toes is a great static stretch that works out several different muscle groups. If you are not very flexible, reach towards your feet as far as you can, and reach a little more each day. If you are already flexible, try working on laying your hands flat on the floor, palms down.

The Swan Lift is another static stretch that works many different muscle groups. Lay flat on the floor, reach behind you, and grab your ankles. Lean your head and chest back. Hold this position for a few seconds until you feel the “burn,” then release.

Signs of Diabetes

 

There has yet to be a specific cause or any one factor determined for what causes diabetes, but there have been strong hereditary connections made and people with a close family member with type 2 diabetes have up to a 15 % increase in getting the disease. Obesity, poor diet and a stationary lifestyle will also increase person’s chances of developing diabetes. Some nationalities and races, such as African Americans and Asians seem to be at higher risks for developing type 2 diabetes. It is thought that up to 18% of Americans suffering from the early onset of diabetes do not even know they have it. Why is that?

Diabetes is most often times treatable but the symptoms of diabetes are often masked and very comparable to other diseases, causing it to go ignored and undiagnosed or treated until it reaches a critical point.

One of the first signs of diabetes is often a feeling of being rundown all the time and never feeling as if you got enough rest and one of tiring very easily. There may also be sudden mood swings and bouts of depression as the body’s glucose levels vary and try to self regulate. There can also be an unexplained and sudden weight loss as well as times of rapid breathing when little exertion has been expended. There can be sensations of excessive thirst and extreme hunger where the body never seems satiated. It can also be accompanied by blurred vision, headaches or a numbing and tingling sensation in the body’s extremities. Dry itchy skin and being unable to heal quickly from minor cuts and bruises are also signs of diabetes. High blood pressure and recurring UTIs and repeated yeast infections have also been linked with Type 2 Diabetes.

What we term Type 1 Diabetes also known as juvenile diabetes is most times discovered in early childhood but can actually at any age. This type of diabetes has all of the same symptoms of Type 2 but is much more common among Caucasians than in any other ethnicity and is autoimmune disease that develops from the body’s inability to produce insulin. Most people diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes will need to be on an insulin maintenance program and will most likely require daily insulin injections.

We have all experienced headaches and times of feeling rundown and most of us have experienced all the other symptoms listed above and obviously having any one the symptoms at any one time is not a sure diagnosis of having diabetes. Most, if not all can be linked to other ailments as well, but if you experience a combination of any of the above listed signs it would be pertinent to visit a physician for a complete work up to accurately determine if any of these symptoms are linked to diabetes.
