Weight Training Soccer: Learn Overall Conditioning

Soccer weight training requires muscles to be strong, speedy and resistant instead of adding pounds of useless bulk in muscles. Upper body weight training for soccer is not as important as is for the legs, but we still do it for overall conditioning and strength.

I think fitness training should start with the legs. It should be started with the crouching exercises first. This session should be followed by putting the bar to a weight with which the players can perform 20 reps with. Considering that they have good strength, hence give them 220 pounds to start with. The exercise involves getting under the bar then placing it on the upper back and finally standing up with it.

Instruct them to step back out of the racks and stand with their feet, shoulder width apart or wider. They must hold it as they go down until their hips are slightly lower than the top of their knees. In weight training soccer, after coming to this point the players should quickly stand up fully and breathe out. Encourage them to repeat this for 20 reps even when they are dead tired.

Soccer Fitness

They should be given a break of 5-10 minutes before switching to the leg curl machine to work on hamstrings. 4 sets of 15 reps each should be completed by them. The Stiff-Legged Dead lift with 4 sets of 15 reps should be completed between each set of Leg Curls. Hamstrings are vital for players speed, thus we would want them to be strong enough.

Finish the leg workouts on Standing calf-raise machine and doing 3 sets of 25 reps

Start the upper body workout with the Incline bench press.
Now when the they are warmed up they must go on by including enough weights so that the next set of 10 reps is harder to do. A total of 5 sets of 10 repetitions are required with the weights, while stretching their chest and shoulders, yet pausing to relax for 2 minutes in the middle of each set.

Next are the pull-up exercises in this section of soccer strength training. This exercise should be done with the palms facing their body so that their biceps and back can become strong. The last part of the upper body portion of this workout is to work out the abdominals and 5 sets of 20 or more reps of leg raises would do well. Then finish with 5 sets of 50 or more crunches or sit-ups.

I will not force you to agree, but I would like to give some advices. In practicing free soccer training drills, the best teams keeps on switching the ball, looking for space and exploring the opposition’s defense for a fault. These skills can easily be imparted to the new players, if, during the soccer coaching drills, the coaches would follow the tips we are going to mention in the following sections.

A match-winning line of attack: Get your team to keep the game flowing and divide defenses by swaying the ball from one side to the other to make space and outnumber the defense. Moving the ball from one to another player within the team helps reducing the stress.

The quick switch or the blind pass: Train one or two of your mid-fielders to dribble to the right, using the right foot, and then swing the ball to the left, sending almost a blind pass.Rapid Switching or the Blind Pass: Develop a skill in one or two mid-fielders to move the ball with right foot while kicking it to the left, showing almost a blind pass. Left-footed mid-fielder, can perform the trick by moving the ball using the left foot and throwing it back to the right side using left foot.

The defender of the opposite team will be surprised to see the pass and your team will catch them sleeping.

Soccer Drills

All the players should always be ready for this type of pass so ask your team to regularly perform the technique. Of all the soccer drills, your kids may find this drill rather difficult but it is it’s competitive nature that guarantees player’s total participation in soccer practice.

To complete this drill, six small goals are to be setup on both the sides of the ground. A team scores a point if it gets a player to run through the goals in the middle when playing out from the back. They get two points for passing through the last goals as this encourages switching.

During free soccer training drills, the goals should be made sufficiently wide to show that there is not much use just positioning a player between them to prevent a run or pass. Running from point A to B should be assigned to one player. When the players are between the goals, attackers won’t be able to attack and goal.

Young defenders usually move away from their designated positions. They move to where the ball is being played. Thus the attackers should always be alert of the target areas and try to switch the game to the other area while making use of the defenders absence in that area.

Dedicate some time during the next session of football drills, to show the players to cover the entire width of the pitch. Make  them practice  the skills, and show them where the actual risk may come from.
